到台灣後，發現兩美物香港沒有：烏魚和蓮霧。取其諧音：正合年年有餘。真有趣，我幾乎每年都畫這烏魚與蓮霧。幾乎與白石畫蝦、黃胄畫驢同。只是白石畫心中之蝦，余畫眼中之魚也。
After arriving in Taiwan I discovered two subjects not found in Hong Kong: mullets and wax apples. These also happened to rhyme with the traditional saying for “years of plenty.” I paint the mullet and wax apple nearly every year, just like how Bai Shi painted shrimps and Huang Zhou painted donkeys. The difference was that Bai Shi painted the shrimps in his mind while I painted the fish I saw with my own eyes.
我每畫魚，必清早去魚市場，買歸佈置好後馬上動筆，直至夜深，必當日完成。求其新鮮生動也。
For my fish paintings, I always went to the fish market early in the morning, return home after making my purchase, set everything up then start painting right away. I then painted into the night and always finished the painting on the same day. This ensured that the painting felt as fresh and lively as possible.
